Plant of the Month

April

Prunus subhirtella var. autumnalis - Autumn Cherry

Despite its name, the Autumn Cherry blooms in spring. In keeping with its name however,  it also blooms sporadically during warm autumn months, providing a very long season of interest.  This species is one of the more reliable of the cherries - being more cold, heat and stress tolerant than most.

Autumn Cherry has semi-double flowers which are deep pink in bud and open to light pink, finally fading almost to white. They are 3/4" in diameter.

Try using Autumn Cherry as a focal point, or several in a group under-planted with spring bulbs for a fabulous burst of spring color.
