Ian Robertson, Ltd. Horticultural Tips
September Tips* q Core aerate all lawn areas and spread 1/2 inch of organically composted manure over surface. Rake to evenly distribute. Overseed bare areas of turf after loosening the surface. Use only Va Tech recommended seed mixtures. q Order spring-flowering bulbs for fall planting now. q Plant fall annuals now to change color schemes and to replace flagging summer annuals. q Do not prune trees this month. Pruning now can remove many of next year's flower buds as well as force tender new growth which may be killed by a hard frost. q Continue to monitor soil moisture around newly planted shrubs & trees. If we receive less than 1" of rain per week, provide supplemental water. Consider attaching a rain barrel to your downspout to collect rainwater for later watering of plants when rain is scarce. q Avoid planting, if possible this month - particularly transplanting plants already in the ground. Wait for cooler weather in the fall. q Cut roses back by one-third and fertilize to promote a fall flush of blooms. Keep well watered and remove any leaves infected with Blackspot. Keep well mulched, but remember to keep the mulch away from the stem to prevent rot. q Plant peonies and Bearded Iris this month. q Continue to deadhead perennials to encourage blooms until frost. Apply an organic 5-10-15 fertilizer and keep well mulched. * These tips are just general suggestions. Be sure to consult your local Cooperative Extension Agent or a good book, such as The American Horticultural Society's Pruning & Training Manual for more thorough instructions.
