| Ian Robertson, Ltd. Horticultural Tips
May Tips* q We are getting to the end of planting season in central Virginia - but you can still plant B&B and container-grown deciduous and evergreen trees and shrubs, but be sure to soak them well and continue to water weekly until established. q Prune trees only if removing a damaged limb. q Prune spring flowering shrubs (such as Forsythia and azaleas) and vines after they have finished blooming. q Fertilize spring flowering shrubs immediately after blooming. Use an organic fertilizer, such as Plant-Tone. q Inspect all plants for pests and diseases. Catching problems early makes them easier to solve. Use organic methods whenever possible. q One common disease in spring is powdery mildew on Crape Myrtles. Use summer-weight horticultural oil to control. q As you may have noticed, weeds are growing rampantly right now. Do a little weeding at frequent intervals before you (and your garden) become overwhelmed. q Deadhead roses regularly to encourage new blooms. Remove dead and dying stems quickly to prevent spread of disease. * These tips are just general suggestions. Be sure to consult your local Cooperative Extension Agent or a good book, such as The American Horticultural Society's Pruning & Training Manual for more thorough instructions.
